Oxford Portraits

December 19, 2012

Oxford houses a wealth of portraits of early modern writers, artists, scholars and musicians. The BBC’s Your Paintings website now makes it much easier to find what is here, and to look out for items that may be too much part of the everyday field of vision to be properly registered even for those who have long been in Oxford. There are familiar figures from Erasmus and Montaigne to Grotius and Locke; perhaps less well known is Mary Beale’s portrait of Aphra Behn at St Hilda’s College.
